All Tied Up with Jane Igharo

All Tied Up with Jane Igharo
In our first instalment of a mini-series focused on writers, we sat down with Ties That Tether author Jane Igharo. While tremendously personal, the novel is only partially inspired by the life and journey of the Nigerian-born creator. In this episode, we talked about Jane’s process…how she’s edged her way to writing such a powerful story. She opened up about a pivotal conference (Pitch Wars), that she attended in New York, where she learned how to structure her book. The experience helped her refine her craft and learn important tips from more experienced authors. Jane’s many hours of work and finesse finally landed her a mentor – who revised her book and sent it to a few agents. Only 24 hours later, Jane received a call that changed her career. Her story reads like a movie script…one where she chased a dream and, with persistence, made it come true.
Her book, a modern-day love story, appeals to a wide variety of cultures and mindsets. She builds out a strong and complex protagonist and layers in very authentic tensions experienced by people dating outside of their culture. And to close off the show, Jane offers up some wise words of advice for up and coming authors.
About Jane Igharo
Jane Abieyuwa Igharo was born in Nigeria and immigrated to Canada at the age of twelve. Jane was always outgoing and artistic growing up, she dreamt of being an actress and then found her passion for writing. Coming from Nigerian parents it was stereotypical that their kids pursue prestigious careers, but Jane’s mother knew she had a more artistic path. In high school she wrote poems and fictional novels that sparked her imagination. She has a journalism degree from the University of Toronto and works as a communications specialist in Ontario, Canada. She writes about strong, audacious, beautifully flawed Nigerian women much like the ones in her life. When she isn’t writing, she’s watching “Homecoming” for the hundredth time and trying to match Beyoncé’s vocals to no avail.
